Medical University of Silesia in Katowice
Katowice, Poland
Overview
The Medical University of Silesia boasts a rich history spanning over sixty years. Established in 1948 as the Medical Academy in Rokitnica Bytomska, it initially offered programs in medicine and dentistry. Over time, the university expanded by adding numerous clinical and theoretical departments to enhance its educational offerings. In the mid-1950s, plans were made to relocate the university to Katowice, a transition that was completed in 1971, making it the largest medical school in Poland at that time. Since then, the university has continued to grow, opening several new schools including the School of Pharmacy with a Medical Analytics Unit, a second School of Medicine, and a School of Nursing (later integrated into the second School of Medicine). Further developments after 2000 included the establishment of the School of Health Care in 2001 and the School of Public Health in 2002. Today, the Medical University of Silesia is a prominent higher education institution, offering 16 fields of study across five schools. It provides education to over 9,000 students, including those in PhD and postgraduate programs. The university also offers English-language programs for international students.
